Shimmering rain falls on the dry brown earth covered with shattered rocks. Slowly the green leaves appear, soon carpeting the landscape. From the parched sand covered with black cracks, Sturt's Desert Pea flowers appear in profusion.
Silver sequins depict the falling rain and green oval sequins the leaves. Red rip-stop nylon flowers are on a background of teabags with black and gold webbing spray, while the red chiffon sleeves add to the heat of the atmosphere. All the embellishments are hand-stitched to the brown cotton with Mettler thread. A McCalls pattern was used.
After the Drought was made for display in Darling Harbour, Sydney Australia from 27 June to1 July2007 at the Art to Wear exhibition by the Quilters' Guild of NSW. I was then asked if the dress could be sent to Perth, Western Australia for display in their Art to Wear exhibition in the first week of August 2007. On its return from there, there was an invitation to send it back to New South Wales for exhibition in the Hunter Valley Garden Art to Wear display later in August 2007. This dress was also exhibited in Australia's Fashion Fantasia in Hobart on 3November 2007.

Australia's Fashion Fantasia is an annual event in Hobart, Tasmania for textile artists to display their skills. There is a section for students, which grows every year.
